NMSD Teaching and Learning
"Where we hold ourselves accountable to global standards"
We know that we belong to a wonderful district that provides our students with a rich and powerful education. We are excited to continue this tradition of excellence, and to be afforded the opportunity to help shape this district for years to come. To learn more about our Teaching and Learning program, feel free to contact our team, or explore the monthly blog posts.
Your T&L Team
For the past 5 years, the North Marion School District has been working tirelessly on the development of our Standards Based System for Teaching and Learning. Based on the principals of John Hattie’s Visible Learning (http://visible-learning.org), the NMSD’s system focuses on the development of clear learning targets, learning plans that center on student engagement, assessments that are clearly linked to the learning targets, and response systems to meet student needs. This system/cycle was developed with the knowledge that it is the foundation of all teaching and learning, and that through it we can best meet the unique needs of our student population.
We are excited for the results that the work has yielded. This Teaching and Learning Handbook is intended to serve as a guide for our educational team members as they navigate the process of curriculum development. We know, that the more this process is aligned across our district, the stronger the system will become. This is exceedingly important for a small district like ours, where students often remain part of our system from Kindergarten to graduation. If we can provide them an education that builds as they move through our system, then we are truly creating students who are “empowered to lead productive lives as stewards of their world.”
"Where teaching and learning is challenging, dynamic, and engaging"
When North Marion School District adopted its mission and vision statement three years ago, we knew that at its core was the concept of powerful teaching and learning. To support this core, we have developed our Teaching and Learning Support team, whose primary work will be to “hold ourselves accountable to global standards” and create classrooms that are “challenging, dynamic and engaging.”

STANDARDS BASED SYSTEM OF
TEACHING AND LEARNING
“Standards-based education…improves student achievement; increases the accuracy and fairness of grades; and enhances communication between classroom teachers and students, parents, colleges, and employers regarding what students are expected to know and do in each course and how well each student is performing in relation to those expectations. Student achievement is improved by using high-probability instructional practices in the classroom, including establishing clear learning targets for students that are based on state standards (in most states, the Common Core State Standards) and giving students ongoing feedback on their achievement.”
